Halifax is organized around a network of state roads rather than a dense downtown. Route 106 runs east-west through the center of town, Route 58 crosses it north to south, and Routes 36 and 105 connect additional residential areas. The Halifax commuter rail station on Holmes Street provides MBTA service on the Kingston Line, while shops, municipal offices, schools, and other everyday services are concentrated around the main road corridors. East and West Monponsett Ponds are major features of the town, with public recreation areas, fishing access, beaches, and boat facilities along their shores. Residential neighborhoods extend around the ponds and away from the busier roads, with newer subdivisions mixed among older streets. For a relatively small town, the ponds and rail station shape daily travel almost as much as the roads.
