Hancock has one of the more unusual layouts in Berkshire County: the town is roughly 20 miles long and only a few miles wide, and mountain terrain separates its northern and southern sections. Route 43 provides the main connection through much of Hancock, while Route 20 crosses the southern part of town. Most municipal and commercial development is limited, but Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort creates a major year-round center of activity with skiing, lodging, restaurants, events, and summer recreation. Pittsfield State Forest extends into Hancock as part of a roughly 10,500-acre protected landscape with trails, camping, fishing, and other recreation. Outside the resort area, residential properties are spread along mountain roads and through lightly developed sections of the town. Hancock’s shape and terrain make location especially relevant here because getting between some parts of town can require a surprisingly indirect route.
