Much of Hinsdale is arranged along the East Branch of the Housatonic River valley, with the town center and most of its development occupying the lower terrain between the surrounding Berkshire hills. Route 8 provides the main north-south connection, while Route 143 heads east past Ashmere Lake. Town offices, the public library, local businesses, and other services are found around the developed central area, with Pittsfield providing a much larger commercial and employment center a short distance west. Water is a major part of Hinsdale’s landscape: Ashmere Lake and Plunkett Reservoir both provide fishing and other recreation, and several additional reservoirs lie within town. The Appalachian Trail also crosses the western side of Hinsdale over Tully Mountain, giving the town a direct connection to one of the country’s major trail systems.
