Hamilton Reservoir runs through the middle of Holland and has a major influence on the town’s road pattern, residential development, and recreation. Many homes are clustered around the reservoir, while the town center along Sturbridge Road contains Town Hall, the library, school facilities, and other municipal services. Holland is unusual in having no state-owned road running through town; connections to Route 20, I-84, and the Massachusetts Turnpike are reached through local roads outside the municipal boundary. The reservoir provides public fishing and boating access, and additional forest and conservation land occupies much of northern and western Holland. With limited commercial development inside town, local roads do double duty as neighborhood connections and the routes residents use to reach larger shopping and service areas elsewhere in the region.
