How to get Natural Light in Your Apartment

natural light to your boston apartment

Although there are tons of lighting options to purchase, nothing can compare to beautiful natural light streaming through your home. While it’s true that a variety of factors affect the amount of natural light specific areas can get, there are steps you can take to get more.  Boston has a vast array of great lighting stores that can totally help transform a room into something much better than it was before.  Greater Boston is also blessed with a lot of standard and custom window providers that will help your apartment building or real estate be splashed with great light.  Read below for our tips on how to get the most natural light in your home possible!

Windows

Many homes come with old-fashioned windows that could use some updating. The smaller the window, the less light it will let in. While replacing windows can have expensive upfront costs, it will be worth it when natural light is streaming through your home.  Boston residents and renters alike have strong desires for bigger windows and a better view.  Lot’s of developers and builders now check their compasses to figure how to build properties where the building itself is exposed to the highest levels of light throughout the course of the year.  Additionally, you can change where the windows are located if necessary since certain sides of your home will receive more sunlight than others. It is also a good idea to clean your windows on a regular basis so that nothing is obstructing the sun from getting in. A skylight is another great option, although it is much more expensive and requires a great deal of work.  Renters will often pay $50 to $100 more per month if an apartment in Boston has one or two skylights.  So skylights are huge in helping landlords get their places rented more quickly or for more money!

Layout

Having an open layout makes a big difference in the lighting of your home. When there are fewer walls and doors in the way, there is room for more natural light to get in and illuminate the whole space. Unfortunately, this option is only available to owners and not renters. While you cannot change the layout of a rental, you can leave doors open to let some natural light in from room to room. If you are a developer, its important to remember that fewer walls are more.  The real estate agents in the Greater Boston Area will also always back that claim!  If you are Greater Boston Landlord and are thinking about renovating; it is always a good idea to have a couple of real estate agents come out to your property and give you their ideas on layouts and fit and finish for maximum rent or sell.  Real estate agents in Boston know what is hot and what is renting and selling!

Mirrors

While we often see them as a way to check on our appearance, mirrors are also natural light throwers. A large mirror can reflect light from one area of the house to another. Be careful of placement, as you do not want to create uncomfortable glare. As a bonus, mirrors can also make your space appear bigger!

Colors

If you read about design and décor, you probably know the importance of wall colors and how much of a difference they can make in your home. Light colors not only make a room look bigger, but they also make it look lighter. Add in natural light coming in through windows, and you will have a bright space! Like the mirrors we mentioned before, light-colored walls reflect light as well.  If you are trying to rent or sell a property in Boston – go with neutral colors.
