Leyden has no state highway or conventional commercial district, so local roads do most of the work of connecting its farms, homes, municipal facilities, and surrounding regional destinations. Brattleboro Road passes the Town Office and continues north toward Vermont, while Greenfield Road provides an important route south toward larger shopping, employment, and service areas. The town itself has limited retail, with public facilities and a small number of local businesses serving a widely dispersed population. Forest covers most of Leyden, but the outdoor areas are specific and substantial rather than generic open space. Leyden Wildlife Management Area covers roughly 759 acres around Ball Mountain, and portions of the Green River Wildlife Management Area protect additional land along the Green River and its tributaries. Leyden Glen Reservoir is another prominent feature, although it functions as a public water supply rather than a general recreation area. Most errands take residents beyond the town line, while the roads, farms, municipal center, and protected land account for much of what is actually found within Leyden.
