Boston apartment availability at highest level since the pandemic
The number of available apartments in Boston is at its highest in years, forecasting a potentially easier time for renters looking for a new home, according to new data.
The apartment availability rate — which includes units that are currently on the market or will be soon — is at 7.21% within the city of Boston and 6.46% for the Boston region, up about 36% from this time last year, according to apartment listing platform Boston Pads.

Meanwhile, advocates say about a million Bay State tenants need a rent ceiling, as they’re already forgoing essentials, like medicine and food, to pay for the roof over their heads.
The study, “Untold Threat: Rent Control Ballot Question Will Imperil Municipal Budgets,” released by the Greater Boston Real Estate Board with research by The Center for State Policy Analysis at Tufts University, estimates a 6% hit to residential property values in all communities and more than 10% in some cities by 2029.
