Pelham sits along the ridge between the Connecticut River Valley and the Quabbin Reservoir watershed, and that geography shapes both its roads and its development pattern. Route 202 runs north-south through the eastern part of town, while Amherst Road carries traffic west toward the larger concentration of shopping, employment, health care, and university activity in Amherst. Pelham has limited commercial development of its own; town offices are located on Amherst Road, while the Community Center on South Valley Road provides another municipal focal point. The eastern third of town is state-owned Quabbin watershed land, making protected open space a much larger presence here than in most Massachusetts communities. Buffam Brook Conservation Area adds another public natural area closer to the developed western side of Pelham. Most everyday shopping takes place outside town, so Amherst Road plays an important role in connecting Pelham’s residential areas with regional services.
