About Apartments near Boston University
The Boston University Adventure
Boston University has a proud history beginning with its origin in 1839 as the Newbury Biblical Institute in Newbury Vermont. In 1869, the school established its Boston location in the Beacon Hill neighborhood. After the Great Boston Fire of 1872, the school rebuilt on Beacon Hill, Boylston Street, and Copley Square. In the 1930’s, the Charles River campus was built. From its inception, the school’s founders demonstrated their dedication to forming a learning community that was inclusionary as opposed to exclusionary. With the exception of the School of Theology, the school opened its doors to all students regardless of religion, race, or sex.
Boston University gained a reputation as a trailblazing institution. Alexander Graham Bell, a Boston University professor, invented the telephone in 1875. Borden Parker Browne, a professor of philosophy at BU, led a popular movement called Boston Personalism. In 1877, Helen Magill White, a classics scholar, became the first woman to earn a PhD from an American university. In 1878, Anna Oliver was awarded a degree in theology from Boston University. She was the first woman to earn that degree in the United States. In 1881, Lelia Robinson Sawtelle, graduated from the BU law school. She was the first woman admitted to the Massachusetts’ bar. In 1897, the first black psychiatrist in the United States, Solomon Carter Fuller, graduated from BU’s school of medicine. His research contributed to the study of Alzheimer’s disease. Martin Luther King, Jr. received his doctorate here in 1955.
From first-year students to upperclassmen to graduate students, Boston University meets everyone’s needs with an international flare. It ranks number ten among United States campuses for the number of international students. There are over three hundred programs of study and ten colleges and undergraduate schools.
