Balch House
Balch House is located at 448 Cabot Street. This property was the ancestral home of the Balch family from 1636 to 1916. The oldest part of this well-preserved structure was built in 1679, making it a rare surviving example of a 17th century home. It was added to in1721, and a larger addition was made in the late 17th century or early 18th century. Each section of Balch House is restored to be representative of its respective architectural period. It is open for public tours for a $5 fee from June 1 to August 31 on Thursdays and Saturdays from 12pm to 4pm.
John Cabot House
The John Cabot House is located at 117 Cabot Street. John Cabot built this house during the Revolutionary War in 1781. It has the distinction of being Beverly’s first brick mansion. Already a successful merchant family, the Cabot brothers made a lot of money by investing in privateer ships that raided British merchant shipping during the American Revolution. Cabot House is currently a museum, which is open Wednesdays 1pm to 9pm and otherwise open Tuesday through Saturdays 9:30am to 4pm.
Odd Fellows Building
Odd Fellows Building is located at 188-194 Cabot Street across from the Beverly City Hall. J. Foster Ober, a local architect, built the structure in High Gothic Revival style in 1893. It has the distinction of having been the location of the offices of President William Howard Taft during the summers he spent in Beverly MA.
Hale Farm
Hale Farm is located at 39 Hale Street. In 1694, the oldest part of this house was built for Reverend John Hale, who played a significant part in the Salem Witchcraft Trials from 1692 to 1693. This is where Reverend Hale’s book, “A Modest Inquiry into the Nature of Witchcraft”, was written. His grandson, Captain Robert Hale, Jr. expanded the house in 1745. The house is currently open to the public June 1 through August 31 on Thursdays from noon to 4pm and on Saturdays from noon to 6pm.
