The Burlington Library

Early History

The Burlington Library, founded in 1816, was a town project. At that time, people referred to it as a “social library”. Twenty-two proprietors sold shares at $2.00 each. There was an annual assessment of $.25 per citizen, which raised other needed funds. In the beginning, the library had only twenty volumes.

By 1857, the town realized that it needed a real public library. Not having a designated building, Silas Cutler’s store housed the library. Mr. Cutler received $30.00 per year for books, rent, and utilities. By 1868, the library’s inventory had increased to 774 volumes. The business owners later sold the store to William Carter. By this time, the annual library budget had increased to $75.00. The library then moved to the Bennett Block. Those owners later split the structure in two. They moved one part of the building to 13 Sears Street and the other part of the building to 2 Will Street.

Between 1879 and 1896, the former Town Hall became the new library’s home. In 1892, David Simonds donated $1,000 toward the purchase of books. The town elected a board of trustees to administer the funds. The elected trustees were Augustus Prouty, Matthew Stevenson Jr., and Marshall Wood. At this point, people realized that the space allotted for the library was insufficient. There were books in piles on the floors and books being stored in people’s homes.

By 1890, the library contained one thousand volumes. A former resident, Edward Barker, donated enough money to convert the old Center School into a library. (This building is now the Burlington Town Museum.) The Library and Reading Room opened in 1897 and remained there for over seventy years.

20th Century to Today

By 1960, the population of Burlington had grown to nearly thirteen thousand people. The small library had become inadequate. In 1964, the town purchased a 1.5-acre site on Sears Street. In 1967, construction began. The new library opened in 1968. In the 1980’s, computers were added. The town renovated and expanded the library in 1995.

Burlington Public Library has continued to expand and modernize. The library has added numerous public computers and building-wide wireless internet is available. It is now a center for research. By 2017, its circulation increased to more than 270,919 items and more than 141,551 patrons frequented the library. In addition to research and books, the library has meeting rooms and 518 programs for children, teens, and adults. Living in Burlington, MA apartments gives you access to this incredible resource.
