Public Education in Framingham
Education has a long history in Framingham dating back to 1706, when the first schoolmaster was hired. Despite this, the city of Framingham did not have a public school building until 1716. The year 1792 saw the first high school in Framingham open its doors to the public. It was shortly closed down, however, as a result of financing issues. It was much later, in 1852, that the first town-operated high school was opened.

Edgell Memorial Library, located at 3 Oak Street, is a fine example of Victorian Gothic architecture, and one of the few such examples in the area to survive to this day. It was built in 1872 as a memorial to soldiers who served in the Civil War. The Framingham History Center now uses it as exhibition and storage space for their collection of historic artifacts, a museum shop, presentation space for their monthly programs, and as office space.
Framingham Historic Village Hall, located at 2 Oak Street, was built in 1834 to serve as Framingham’s second town hall. It faces the southern edge of the Centre Common. Last used as the town hall in 1891, this Doric columned building is now a rental venue for weddings and other special occasions. It is able to accommodate up to 180 guests.
The Old Academy, which now houses the Framingham Historical Society, is located at 16 Vernon Street. It is a stone structure built in Greek Revival style with a columned front entrance. Built in 1837, it originally housed the Framingham Academy. Artifacts from Framingham’s history are now on display here. It is open from Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 4pm.

If there is any style of beer or ale you would like to try, they have their own custom samples on offer. The kitchen prepares sandwiches, burgers, appetizers, wood-fired pizza, and salads. They offer innovative as well as traditional variations on pub food, such as The House Sausage & Ricotta Pizza that includes pistachio pesto, broccolini, and cherry peppers. Their chicken wings are wood fired in their pizza oven. The house cheeseburger includes green chili and fried onions.
Nzuko is located at 341 Cochituate Road. They offer organic, fresh food: chicken, pork, salmon, and lamb, as well as vegetarian and vegan dishes. Their stated mission is to make healthy, flavorful global cuisine. The ambiance of this small counter service restaurant is open, bright, and airy. Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Caribbean cuisines inspire the food they skillfully prepare. Make no mistake, the food here is worthy of being referred to as cuisine. In addition to wonderful entrees, they have an extensive list of specialty salads, wraps, side dishes, desserts, and smoothies.
