Welcome to Northeastern University
In 1898, Northeastern University began its journey to one of the most prestigious research universities in the world. For more than one hundred years, it has been famous as one of the most expansive co-op/internship programs in the world. In addition to its learning community at the main campus in Boston, it has campuses in Maine, California, North Carolina, Vancouver, Washington, and England. For students who want to include study abroad in their academic-year, there is a program for studying abroad that includes more than 170 colleges and universities.
Northeastern’s cooperative education program helps establish academic success and professional success. They combine professional experience with classwork and coordinate with 3,100 partners all over the world. This distinguishes Northeastern University from other universities and complements student life as no other university can.
New students might have trouble deciding which opportunities to choose. There are more than ninety majors available. Freshmen do not have to choose a major immediately. By the end of sophomore year, students do have to make a commitment. There is an undergraduate student handbook to help first-year students traverse the many available options. International students will find Northeastern University to be a welcoming environment. There are currently students from over 140 countries. Transfer students can apply in both the fall and spring semesters.
Programs at Northeastern University
The Honors Program at Northeastern is one of the many advantages offered at NEU. This student-driven, interdisciplinary program provides advantages in achieving personal and professional goals. The focus of the program is on intellectual dexterity and developing an encompassing worldview.
This is a great school for graduate students also. As of this writing, there were 400 hundred graduate programs! Each college has different application requirements so it is important to check each one. Graduate programs are available in the following:

Student Life and Activities
Northeastern is an ideal place for student activities. There are over 400 student organizations to suit the needs of both new and returning students. If you are interested in community involvement, there is a student center focused on leadership, a center for community service, and a social justice resource center. When you are facing physical or emotional challenges, they have seven different organizations that offer support. There are organizations such as the Center for Intercultural Engagement that help with forming connections. When you apply for housing, the Housing and Residential Life office is there to help. The Off Campus Housing and Support Services is available to assist students with NEU off campus housing. There is a fully staffed Student Affairs team to support students in all aspects of their university experience.
Fitness, Entertainment, and Enrichment
When you want to exercise, there is no better place than Marino Recreation Center. Located at 369 Huntington Avenue, it has an indoor track, cardio machines, weights, and courts. There are numerous performance-oriented clubs such as Acting Out, Silver Masque, and Live Music Associations. There are print media clubs such as The Huntington News and Spectrum Literary Magazine. There are STEM clubs such as Marine Biology Club, Biomedical Engineering Society, and Wireless Club. Female students in STEM majors have organizations that represent their interests such as Graduate Women in Science and Engineering and Northeastern Women in Technology. There are too many clubs and organizations to list in this article, but no matter what your interests are, there are people here that share them.
University Housing and Residence Life
Applying for housing at NEU is simple, but you must follow certain rules for housing for students. There are publications that explain what you need to do: Guide to Residence Hall Living, the Student Handbook, and an agreement that covers dining-hall requirements. If you have questions concerning housing and living on campus or NEU off campus housing, you can contact Housing and Residential Life. They will offer housing guidance.
General Information about College Dormitories at NEU
To insure the health and safety of students who live on campus, all college dorms are smoke-free. Every room has the following furnishings: desks, a dresser, desk chairs, and bed frames with mattresses. In most halls, students can use common areas for studying. Most rooms are double rooms. However, room selection is possible. Single rooms are available; if you need a single room, you can register with the University Health and Counseling Services and they can work on providing housing accommodations. Bath facilities are single-gender but coed housing is an option. If you prefer a private bathroom in your living area, they are located in the apartment-style residence halls. Some apartments have a kitchenette instead of a full size kitchen. Wireless internet is available throughout the campus. Northeastern University Housing and Residential Life determine move-in and move-out dates.
Housing Requirements for Each Year
University housing is required for first-year students. Review options before the fall semester. The freshman dorm provides support for students living on campus. Living with others can be a challenge; a supportive environment is essential. Meal plans are also required for first-year students. Make sure you add in room and board rates when calculating your budget. The housing office could change a housing assignment due to housing and residence availability. A room assigned to a freshman could be in a second year or upperclassmen dorm. The First Year Experience Program provides guidance to incoming students.
The Second Year Experience Program provides guidance for second-year students. As with first-year students, housing assignments could be altered due to the availability of residences. They do have different student housing options such as campus apartments.
For students in their third year and beyond, there are more choices for living arrangements. Apartment style accommodations are available. Off-Campus Housing and Support Services will assist in finding graduate housing for students who need to live off campus. Apartments near Northeastern University are available, but it is a good idea to get some assistance.
When you are looking for a place to live, be aware that rates are determined per semester. Current summer session rates are equal to half of the rate for a full semester.
Northeastern University Off Campus Housing – Leased Properties
Northeastern leases a number of buildings for student housing. They treat these as university buildings. While they are somewhat similar to apartments for rent near Northeastern University, units have their own pricing structure through the school and are not available to rent directly. The office of Housing and Residential Life handles apartment and room assignments. Residents are subject to many of the same rules and restrictions as those living in a dormitory, including roommate assignments.

84 The Fenway
Built in 1915 and renovated in 2014, this lovely traditional style building has a number of floor-plan options. If you are an upperclassman looking for an apartment on campus to share, you may want to consider this building. It has a five-bedroom apartment that makes it easier to live in the same space with many roommates. Washer and dryer laundry facilities are one of the many amenities. If finding an apartment on campus that allows cats is a priority, The Fenway won’t disappoint you; you are allowed one cat. There is also a full kitchen containing an oven, range, and refrigerator.
136 Hemenway Street
If a big high-rise dorm is not cozy enough for you, this building may interest you. If you also find living in a first-floor apartment to be more convenient, you may find your apartment here. For an added bonus, they have in-unit washers and dryers. This student accommodation is for undergraduates.
49 Symphony Road
49 Symphony Road is a multi-unit condo structure. These apartments are right next to Northeastern! This places them in the Fenway neighborhood. They have a few amenities not available in other NEU off campus housing: bedroom balcony access and garage parking. If you don’t want to leave your beloved feline behind you don’t have to, this dwelling allows cats. Transportation
Boston is a city with a speedy and efficient transportation system. Whether you live in one of the apartments near Northeastern University or housing on campus, the MBTA will get you there and back. The MBTA Green Line stop for Northeastern University is on Huntington Avenue between Opera Place and Forsyth Street. By remaining on the Green Line E train, you can reach the Museum of Fine Arts, Longwood, and Mission Park.
