Boston University has a proud history beginning with its origin in 1839 as the Newbury Biblical Institute in Newbury Vermont. In 1869, the school established its Boston location in the Beacon Hill neighborhood. After the Great Boston Fire of 1872, the school rebuilt on Beacon Hill, Boylston Street, and Copley Square. In the 1930’s, the Charles River campus was built. From its inception, the school’s founders demonstrated their dedication to forming a learning community that was inclusionary as opposed to exclusionary. Boston University gained a reputation as a trailblazing institution. Alexander Graham Bell, a Boston University professor, invented the telephone in 1875. Borden Parker Browne, a professor of philosophy at BU, led a popular movement called Boston Personalism. In 1877, Helen Magill White, a classics scholar, became the first woman to earn a PhD from an American university. In 1878, Anna Oliver was awarded a degree in theology from Boston University. She was the first woman to earn that degree in the United States. In 1881, Lelia Robinson Sawtelle, graduated from the BU law school. She was the first woman admitted to the Massachusetts’ bar. In 1897, the first black psychiatrist in the United States, Solomon Carter Fuller, graduated from BU’s school of medicine. His research contributed to the study of Alzheimer’s disease. Martin Luther King, Jr. received his doctorate here in 1955.

Campus Life
Whether you live on campus for the academic year or rent one of the apartments near Boston University, student life is never dull. Campus Housing
