History of Revere MA

Rumney Marsh was the original name of the first English settlement of what would become Revere. Samuel Maverick, who signed his name as “Mavericke”, was the first Englishman to settle here in 1624, predating the settlement in Boston by six years. In 1634, Boston annexed Rumney Marsh. The next major change came in 1739 when Pullen Point, Winnisemmet, and Rumney Marsh seceded from Boston to form the Town of Chelsea. Rumney Marsh became the town center, as it was the most populous of the three sections.

When the Pullen Point and Rumney Marsh sections seceded from Chelsea, they formed the town of North Chelsea in 1846. Pullen Point seceded from North Chelsea to form the Town of Winthrop in 1852, making the final adjustment to the area. This left the original area of the settlement of Rumney Marsh as the Town of North Chelsea. In 1871, this town changed its name to Revere, to honor the American Revolutionary War patriot. Ironically, Paul Revere, himself, never lived in the town named for him. Revere incorporated as the City of Revere in 1914.

In the 19th century it supplied people from the greater Boston region with a popular destination to seek relaxation and recreation.
