History

Settled in 1626, Salem was originally a fishing and farming colony. By 1630, there was a large influx of people from England who were seeking religious freedom and economic opportunity. From its inception, Salem was prominent in the evolution of what would become the United States. Unfortunately, many people today remember Salem not for its historical contributions but for its infamous witch trials.

The trials began in 1692 when a group of bored and frightened girls accused innocent people of witchcraft. Others, sensing an opportunity for revenge, also participated in the accusations. The accused were given hearings in which hysteria and superstition were considered “evidence”. The people of Salem were encouraged to implicate each other in fictitious supernatural acts. Before the madness ended, nineteen people were hanged and one was crushed to death.

Despite Salem’s early history, there were many positive contributions. During the American Revolution, Salem’s harbor became a hub for privateering. American privateers captured or destroyed approximately 800 British ships. During World War II, pilots from Salem patrolled the coast. The first air-sea rescue station on the eastern coast was Air Station Salem. Salem is the birthplace of the National Guard.
