Rental homes here allow the renter to absorb the rich history of the beginnings of our democracy. Many recreational spots are accessible from nearby apartments. In this section, we will delve a little deeper into some of the places that are definitely worth visiting.

Fort Independence

Since 1634, this Castle Island site has been home to multiple fortifications. In 1775, during the Siege of Boston, British forces made what was at that time called Castle William their primary refuge. After Colonel Henry Knox, part of George Washington’s Continental Army, accomplished the fortification of Dorchester Heights with canon retrieved from Fort Ticonderoga, the British evacuated Castle William. On what later became known as Evacuation Day, the British burned down the fort as they fled. Construction of the present-day Fort Independence began in 1836 and was largely completed by 1848. However, further construction and repairs continued until 1861. While the U.S. government ceded the fort to the city of Boston in 1920, they reclaimed it in times of war including WWI and WWII.

Today, it is a historical landmark surrounded by parkland. It is easily accessible from Pleasure Bay and other areas. City apartments in South Boston always have access to green space. It is open from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation provides guided tours and visitors can also explore the site independently.

Castle Island Park

Castle Island Park, the site of Fort Independence, is a public park open year-round. It is a large seaside green space with trails, a playground, and beach access. There is even a great seafood and burger place called Sullivan’s Castle Island on the northern side of the park, right off the Harborwalk. While looking for apartments, you should consider the beautiful landscaping to which you will have access.

This is a great place to relax, take in the history and sea breeze, and grab a quick bite to eat for a picnic on the waterfront. Also, don’t forget the Lt. John J. McCorkle Fishing Pier. Few city residences provide access to great fishing! Not only is it a great place to do some fishing and enjoy the ocean views, it is a great vantage point to see planes land and take off from Logan Airport.

Carson Beach, L Street Beach, and M Street Beach

These three beaches make up a three mile length of waterfront recreational land that stretches from Joe Moakley Park to the edge of City Point. Right along the waterfront, the Harborwalk path runs through all of these beaches.

Along the beach, you will find numerous activities and places to stop. On the Carson Beach side is the Edward J. McCormack Bath House. It has a first aid station, changing rooms and showers, restrooms, drinking water fountains, places to get snacks, and various activities. There is also a lifeguard station to make sure everyone is staying safe. At the opposite end at M Street Beach, you will find the Curley Community Center on one side and the Boston Harbor Yacht Club on the other.

Marine Park at City Point

Located on Farragut Road, Marine Park at City Point is a historic waterfront park adjacent to Pleasure Beach. Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. originally designed the park to be part of his Emerald Necklace park system.

The Park has stretches of green grass with benches and spots to relax and enjoy the South Boston waterfront. The south side of the park has a playground and a bandstand. On the north side, there is a tennis court, a basketball court, a baseball diamond with bleachers, and a football field. The Murphy Memorial Skating Rink is also located on the north side.

Thomas Park (Dorchester Heights)

This is a small park with landscaped grass and semicircular paved paths. The paths lead to the Dorchester Heights monument. In 1898, the state of Massachusetts commissioned the tower to stand as a monument to the 1776 Evacuation Day victory.

Today, you can visit the tower and even go inside for a view from the top. Within the tower, you can look out upon the harbor and imagine what it was like for George Washington to watch the redcoats turn tail and run.

Medal of Honor Park

The center point of Medal of Honor Park is a Vietnam War memorial commemorating South Boston natives that died in the war. The park is a pleasant combination of flat green space and trees where many residents bring their dogs to play and socialize. On the other side of the park, there is a playground for younger children.

On the north side of the park, separated by a fence, there are two baseball fields. The Christopher Lee Playground, which contains a basketball court and a more formally maintained baseball diamond, is adjacent to the park.

Joe Moakley Park

Located along William J. Day Boulevard opposite Carson Beach, this park is more of a sports recreation area than a place to relax under a tree. It has a well-maintained outdoor track and football field, as well as multiple basketball courts, tennis courts, soccer fields, and baseball diamonds. The park also has a hockey rink, restroom facilities, and a playground for kids. South Boston Neighborhood Preschool is located on the north side of the park.
