Tufts University – Apartments For Rent
About Tufts University
From its inception, Tufts University has been a destination for those seeking an egalitarian and inclusive approach to education. In 1847, the members of the Universalist Church decided to found their own school. The school is named after Charles Tufts, who donated twenty acres of his own land to the church with the requirement that it be used for a college. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the college expanded and evolved to become one of the top 100 schools in the United States and one of the most highly regarded research universities in the country. Tufts University is located at 419 Boston Avenue in Medford, MA.
The Tufts University Experience
Tufts forty-five interdisciplinary centers and institutes encompass a large variety of research and educational centers. To advance the college experience on a global scale, Tufts broadens students’ horizons and understanding through the European Center in Talloires, France, The Institute for Global Leadership, and the Fares Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies. There is also research and development on human health through the Institute of the Environment, The Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, and the Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Education research is also a priority and conducted through The Center for the Advancement of Learning and Teaching and The Institute for Research on Learning and Instruction.
However, don’t get the impression that Tufts is only centered on classroom learning. One of the many advantages of living in one of the apartments near Tufts University is that the whole campus is a learning community. This approach is best summed up by Tufts president Anthony P. Monaco: “Tufts represents more than an opportunity to educate oneself. It offers a place to be oneself.” There is no better way to be yourself than to immerse yourself in what you love.
Activities at Tufts
All of the sports that one would expect from a full fare university are available – soccer, golf, tennis, field hockey, rowing, track, lacrosse, swimming and diving, volleyball, baseball, squash, ice hockey, sailing, fencing, basketball, football, and softball. If you just like to watch sports and don’t care to play, there are a myriad of other activities. No matter what your talent, Tufts has something to offer. If you are musically inclined, there are venues for every musical taste. Tufts offers pep, jazz, and concert bands, a symphony orchestra, choral groups, music ensembles, opera, and musical theater.
If you are interested in social outreach, there are campus ministries, international student organizations, a model UN, and a student government organization. Writers have platforms for their work – the literary magazine, the yearbook, and the student newspaper. If you are a performer or are interested in media production the following clubs will provide the outlets you need to display your skills and talents: film society, television station, radio station, drama, dance, and theater.
Whether you live on campus or one of the apartments near Tufts University, there are green spaces right on campus to help you enjoy nature. After spending too much time indoors, your body and brain will need some airing out. Have a picnic on the academic quad or the President’s Lawn. The grass and trees will rejuvenate you before you tackle that next assignment. Nathan Tufts Park in Powderhouse Square is another option. It is located at the six-way intersection of Powderhouse Boulevard, College Avenue, Warner Street, and Broadway.
Campus Housing
Like most universities, Tufts has rules for student housing. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t housing options, but it’s a good idea to understand university housing rules before making a decision.
Incoming freshman and returning students in their second year are required to live in a residence hall. Both single rooms and double rooms are available, though most rooms are double occupancy. The residential model is designed around the student’s academic year. In this way, each dorm helps foster a sense of community because they are sharing similar experiences. It is important that students in their first year don’t feel alone. Upperclassmen are also assigned housing according to their particular class years. Common areas with comfortable chairs and tables make residential life more social. Students can use them for working with their study groups or for relaxing. Some of the common areas also have televisions and/or kitchen facilities.
Graduate students can also apply for housing on campus. At the time of this writing, McCollester House and Tousey House are available for graduate students. Since the kitchens in both of these houses are very small, the school recommends the purchase of a meal plan through Tufts Dining Services.
