About Brighton

While Brighton is often referred to as Allston-Brighton, it is a separate neighborhood with a personality all its own. Tucked into the northwestern corner of Boston, it is separated from Cambridge and Watertown by the Charles River. Though only 2.78 square miles, there are many new, modern luxury apartment buildings in Brighton, MA.

Much of Brighton’s history can be viewed in the Brighton Center Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Encompassing seventeen acres, it was the central point of the cattle business. Its historical significance stems from its contribution to the Continental Army during the American Revolution; their cattle markets supplied the army with food. By 1881, all the cattle yards were gone – replaced with municipal and commercial buildings. It is also the location of the Market Street Burial Ground which was established in 1764.

To get a good overview of Brighton history, visit the Brighton-Allston Heritage Museum just outside of Brighton Center. They have a comprehensive collection of books, artifacts, and maps to illustrate Brighton’s past.
