About East Boston

Many people associate East Boston with Logan International Airport, but it is so much more. Though only 4.7 square miles, there is boundless activity in the place locals call Eastie. This neighborhood is partially human made and partially nature made. Due to the shipbuilding industry, by 1835 there was rapid expansion. East Boston, though separated from the mainland by Boston Harbor, was annexed by the city of Boston in 1836. In the 1940s, five of the inner harbor islands – Hog’s Island, Bird Island, Noddle’s Island, Apple Island, and Governor’s Island – were connected by land fill. Today, East Boston is a thriving neighborhood filled with eclectic restaurants, waterfront parks, historic sites, and luxury apartments.
