About South Boston

During the American Revolution, George Washington chased the British Troops off Dorchester Heights. That spirit has remained in South Boston (called Southie by the locals). Though it’s a neighborhood of Boston, it has retained that closely knit feel of a small community. With the longest stretch of beaches out of all the Boston neighborhoods and a thriving nightlife, Southie is one of Boston’s most sought-after locations for luxury apartments.

Entertainment and Excellent Places to Visit

Fort Independence

Located on Castle Island and part of the National Register of Historic Places, it is one of the oldest English forts in the U.S. It was originally called The Castle when it was built in 1634. In 1692, it was replaced with a sturdier structure called Castle William. After the British abandoned it during the American Revolution, it was renamed Fort Adams and then renamed Fort Independence. Today, Fort Independence still looks as if it is guarding Boston Harbor.

Boston Children’s Museum

Since 1913, this amazing museum in the Seaport District of South Boston has been attracting children of all ages. The many interactive and playful activities are so much fun that children will be both entertained and educated. Exhibits such as the Explore-a-Saurus and the Science Playground encourage children to both explore and think about science.

Castle Island Brewing

Great beer is only part of the story of Castle Island Brewing. They have won awards and recognition from Boston Magazine, Untapped, Yelp, and RateBeer. They are also proud participants in the South Boston community. They support local artists and have charity beer programs for local charities.

When you want to get out and have a friendly game, this is a good choice. Candlepin bowling actually originated in Massachusetts. This establishment has been part of the South Boston community for over twenty years and has a variety of party packages.

Green Space and Waterfronts

Carson Beach, L Street Beach, and M Street Beach

These three beaches stretch for three miles and comprise the exquisite waterfront from Joe Moakley Park to City Point’s edge. Travel the Harborwalk through all three beaches to soak up some sun and ocean breezes. On Carson Beach, the Edward J. McCormack Bath House has changing rooms, showers, snacks, and restrooms.

Castle Island

Castle Island is no longer an island. In 1928, the island was connected to the mainland. One of the five peninsulas in Boston Harbor, it is comprised of 22-acres and more than two miles of trails. In addition to the lovely green spaces, it provides wonderful harbor views.

Marine Park

Marine Park is located along Pleasure Bay and has 255 acres. In the 1950s, a causeway was built that connected Marine Park to Castle Island. This park contains something for everyone – a skating rink, athletic fields, open greenery, a playground, and a beach.

Thomas Park

Thomas Park is home to the Dorchester Heights Monument. Visitors can feel as if they are celebrating Evacuation Day every day when they view this historic site.
